I am a civil engineer by training, a certified mountain guide (UIAGM), a carpenter, an entrepreneur, and a public speaker.
I have taken part in numerous mountaineering and polar expeditions to the South and North Poles from 1983 to the present, including many as a guide.
Over the last few years, I have spent the Antarctic Season at the Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica as expedition leader. Princess Elisabeth Antarctica is the first "Zero Emission" polar research station and I am really proud of being a part of this adventure.
Recently, I was the Initiating Chief Director and Engineer for the on-site construction of the Princess Elisabeth Station, first "zero emission" polar research station, designed and built by the International Polar Foundation in Antarctica during the International Polar Year 2007-08.
In 2002, I founded the International Polar Foundation (IPF) with Drs. André Berger of the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and Hugo Decleir of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The IPF aims to raise awareness about the importance of polar science and climate change.
The IPF also promotes innovative education and outreach initiatives: Over the next several years, we plan to establish Polaris Climate Change Observatories in several locations around the world. Visit the IPF website for more information on our second flagship project after the Princess Elisabeth Station.
Active on a scientific and educational front, I continue to give speeches worldwide and carry out polar expeditions. I am a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. I have also been awarded the Georges Lemaître International Prize in 2003 and the first Climate Change Prize ever given by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2008.
Don't hesitate to drop me a line if you want to get in touch. I try hard to reply to every mail I receive. As I can be quite busy, please allow at least 48 hours for a response (or a lot more if I happen to be in some remote place).
