    Alain Hubert and a first team of ten have arrived at Utsteinen. Like every autumn, at this period of the year, they have re-opened the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica belgian station. Except for a gigantic amount of snow accumulated during the austral winter, everything was OK.

    Now at the end of its second operating season, the overall assessment that we can draw from the early days of the Princess Elisabeth station is more than positive. For instance, we now know that we made the right choices for the base and the decisions taken were also the right ones.

    Following the donation of the Princess Elisabeth Research Station by the International Polar Foundation last April, the Belgian Government has set up a new separately-managed State Institution, the Polar Secretariat, with Alain Hubert as its Chair.

    During the Arctic Arc Expedirion of 2007, Alain Hubert and Dixie Dansercoer had collected snow samples during the entire crossing of the arctic ice pack. The datas have been made on behalf of ESA as a technical partner for the further launching of the new european satellite CryoSat-2.
