Reciprocal Awards

On Friday 04 June, on the premises of the Libre Belgique, the prize-giving ceremony in relation to the Belgian Energy and Environment Awards took place for the fifth time.

Since 2006, the “Belgian Energy and Environment Awards” have paid tribute to more than 600 Belgians who, in an individual capacity or via their organisations, have made exceptional contributions to the construction of a sustainable future at local, regional or national levels.

These prizes bring a host of initiatives in favour of the environment, energy and climate change into focus. The candidates for these outstanding commendation awards are citizens, companies, associations, schools, administrations, research centres, municipalities, and many others. They all have this in common: their commitment to sustainable development.

In general, 13 prizes are awarded, which are subdivided into three categories: Individual Prizes, for citizens and private individuals; Institutional Prizes, intended for companies, municipalities, institutions, associations and the non-commercial sector, and some Special Prizes.

Former prize-winners include Jean-Pascal Van Ypersele, Vice-Chairman of IPCC, the National Lottery, the Delhaize Company, the STIB, and the Municipalities of Gembloux, Tournai, and Watermael-Boitsfort, among others.

IPF has supported this initiative since its creation

One of the Special Prizes is the one awarded by the International Polar Foundation (IPF) which, under the instigation of Alain Hubert, has supported these awards since its creation in 2006.

The awards were presented during a prestigious ceremony introduced by the vice-premier and minister for Finances amongst other important personnalities.

Organised on 04 June 2010, the date coincided this year with the celebration of the United Nations’ World Environment Day. Because of this, the UN delegated one of their representatives in order to honour and encourage these Belgians who are contributing to the construction of our common future.

This year, the IPF has awarded its Special Prize to the town of Soignies for its initiatives on the subject of the way in which its elected officials have reviewed the town’s energy efficiency and have given its citizens a financial incentive to understand why times are changing and what their future conduct should henceforth be.  “We need to manage to deal with the problem of CO2 emissions at the smallest entity level”, Hubert declared during the evening. “And we need to make everyone understand - including the most underprivileged among us, and that is what Soignies has so well understood – that it's only together that we'll get things to change.”

One of the most moving moments of the evening was when a little girl from Soignies reciprocated by awarding a special prize to Alain Hubert for the International Polar Foundation for having supported the “Belgian Energy and Environment Awards” since the beginning of its adventure in 2006.
