UNICEF mission in Pakistan
Posted on the 10.07.2009 by Michel Brent
At the end of June, I participated in a mission organised by UNICEF Belgium in Pakistan as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. We left for the Mardan district where whole families fled their homes to avoid getting caught up in fights between the army and Islamists in the Swat Valley area.

2.5 milion refugees
2.5 milion people currently live in 23 camps in the area. We visited one of them called Jalala. In these camps, roughly 75% of refugees are children. Right now, this civil war is still raging, even if we rarely hear about it in Europe. There is no way for these people to go back to their homes before monsoon season or even before winter.
UNICEF is supporting these people as much as it can, by distributing water, building sanitary facilities and organising vaccination campaigns among other things. Everybody is particularily concerned about the protection of many orphaned children living on their own in these camps.
The current estimate is that 42 milion dollars would be needed to help all of these people.
